About the project

This project is a specialized social media platform designed for the Malaysian school ecosystem (SMK Taman Mutiara Rini). The goal was to bridge the gap between school administration, teachers, students, and parents by creating a centralized, visually engaging hub for academic and extracurricular updates.

  • Role: Lead Product Designer (UI/UX, Visual Strategy)

  • Tools: Figma, Procreate (Custom Illustrations), Canva

  • Target Users: Students, Teachers, and School Administrators

The Challenge:

Standard social media platforms are too broad and often contain distractions. Schools need a dedicated space where:

  • Official announcements don't get lost in a "noise" of global content.

  • Academic progress and extracurricular achievements are celebrated.

  • Teachers can share resources (like "Add Math Linear Law") directly with their specific student cohorts.

Solution & Key Features:

A. Segmented Content Discovery (UX Strategy)

I implemented a three-tier navigation system at the top of the feed to allow users to filter their experience:

  • Global: Wider educational trends and news.

  • My School: Hyper-local updates for SMK Taman Mutiara Rini.

  • By Teachers: A specialized view for pedagogical content and homework links.

B. Specialized Post Types (Product Design)

Unlike standard apps, this UI includes custom "Academic Cards":

  • Polls & Feedback: Used for scheduling or preference gathering (e.g., "Kelas Tambahan" timing).

  • External Resource Integration: Direct linking to quizzes and academic portals (e.g., Quizizz/Google Forms).

  • Announcement Badges: Verified checkmarks for official school accounts to build trust.

C. Visual Identity & Illustration (UI Design)

To make the app feel "warm" and "youthful" yet "professional":

  • Custom Illustrations: Used Procreate to design hand-drawn style illustrations (e.g., the "Growth of a Bean Plant" and character art) to make the interface more relatable for students.

  • Vibrant Color Palette: A mix of professional purple (brand primary) and high-energy accents (orange/green) to differentiate between academic and sports content.

User Flow: Content Creation:

I designed an intuitive "New Post" flow that allows users (specifically teachers) to categorize their content immediately.

  1. Selection: Choose between a Post, Announcement, Story, Reel, or Live.

  2. Tagging: Users can attach a "Reading" icon, Location, or Gallery grid.

  3. Preview: A clean, distraction-free preview ensures the visual hierarchy—title first, imagery second, description last—is maintained for maximum readability.
