To expand my expertise in product design and project management to create high-quality, custom print solutions for educational and recognition-based products. My product design project encompasses not only physical design but also video editing, booth design, brochure design, poster design, YouTube thumbnail design, cap design, ipad cover design, packaging design, sticker design, marketing letters and website design.
This project showcases a comprehensive design process, from initial concept to final production, including:
Product Design & Development: Data merging using Adobe InDesign and Canva and also creating custom student ID cards with qr code and student images using Adobe InDesign. Other than that, I also did design for some award plaques for schools in Malaysia using Adobe Illustrator and Canva, alongside other brochure and poster design.
End-to-End Project Management: Directly contacting and coordinating with manufacturers in China and Malaysia to manage design specifications, material selection, and cost negotiations.
Technical Execution: Streamlining mass production for items like student cards through automated data merging, ensuring both efficiency and consistent quality.
Client-Centric Solutions: Delivering tangible products by overseeing the entire workflow, from digital design to physical manufacturing and final delivery.
The Challenges
Mass Customization at Scale: Creating thousands of unique student ID cards with individual QR codes and photos without manual data entry errors.
Supply Chain Gaps: Bridging the gap between a digital design and a physical product meant navigating different manufacturing standards in Malaysia and China.
Cross-Border Logistics: Coordinating with multiple manufacturers in Malaysia and China while maintaining strict quality control and cost-efficiency.
Brand Consistency: Ensuring that all the award for the schools and brand aesthetic remained identical across vastly different materials (acrylic plaques, and metal plaques).
Tight Deadlines: Managing the end-to-end workflow from conceptual design to physical delivery in time for the 2024/25 school cycle.
I treated the project as a holistic ecosystem rather than a list of separate tasks. I divided my workflow into three pillars:
The Digital Backbone: Establishing templates in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator that could handle "Variable Data Printing" (VDP).
The Global Liaison: Acting as the bridge between technical design requirements and factory capabilities.
To solve the issues of scale and quality, I implemented the following:
Automated Data Merging: Instead of manual entry, I used InDesign Data Merge to sync CSV databases with ID templates. This automatically populated QR codes, student photos, and names.
Material-First Design: For the award plaques, I selected materials that suggested "prestige" (acrylic/metallic finishes) while staying within company budget constraints.
Cross-Platform Marketing: I designed the YouTube thumbnails and marketing letters with high-contrast visual cues to ensure digital engagement mirrored the physical booth's energy.
Manufacturing Oversight: I negotiated directly with China-based manufacturers for bulk items (awards) and local Malaysian printers for time-sensitive items (brochures/posters) to optimize the company's budget.
The project successfully transitioned from a digital concept to a physical presence in Malaysian schools.
Metric | Outcome | Acheivement |
|---|---|---|
Production Efficiency | Reduced QR card and QR badges from days to hours via Data Merging. | 98% |
Brand Consistency | Uniform look across booths, physical product, and digital media. | 90% |
Cost Management | Optimized shipping and manufacturing costs through dual-country sourcing. | 20% savings |
Client Satisfaction | Successful delivery of plaques, mail marketing, award plaques to all schools in Malaysia. | 100% |
The project reached its intended outcome: a professionalized, scalable identity system for schools. We achieved a 98% accuracy rate in mass-produced student qr cards, badges and successfully delivered the School Showcase 2024/25 awards plaques with a fully integrated physical and digital presence.
